The Cinemas Project was developed as a partnership between the Curator, Bridget Crone and National Exhibitions Touring Support (NETS) Victoria.

NETS Victoria

NETS Victoria is the peak body for visual arts touring in the state of Victoria. Collaborating with artists, curators, art galleries and other cultural institutions NETS Victoria co-create and co-present innovative art programs and exhibitions, increasing the opportunities for regional communities to experience high quality contemporary art, craft and design practice.

Touring programs and regional art projects are supported by high quality public and learning programs, which promote increased audience participation and engagement with contemporary art practice.
NETS Victoria encourages regional galleries to self-generate contemporary art programs through its professional development programs and its annual Exhibition Development Fund (EDF) grants program, which assists in the development of new exhibitions for tour.

Bridget Crone, curator

Bridget Crone is a curator and writer. She is Lecturer in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, The University of London. From 2006-11, she was the director of Media Art Bath – a publicly funded commissioning agency. She has experience of curating in a wide variety of contexts including The Showroom, London (2003-6), The Ian Potter Museum, Melbourne (2005), The ICA, London (2012) and Arnolfini, Bristol (2010, 2012). Bridget has published extensively, most recently The Sensible Stage: Staging and the Moving Image (Picture This / Cornerhouse, 2012). She established the Film Exercise, a programme exploring curating in relation to artist moving image practice, in 2009 at the Arnolfini, Bristol. Bridget has a Phd in Visual Cultures from the University of London.

Sam Nightingale is a London-based artist who works with photography and the moving image. Sam works in a research-based and site related way to reveal the multiple histories of cinematic spaces both real and imagined. Often these places are now only accessible through historical research using a range of archives, both formal and personal. In developing the photography and films that emerge from his research, he explores how these sites become complex constructions of story, memory and actuality. Sam’s particular interest in early cinema technologies and structures has led him to research and photograph 100s of spectral cinema sites in Australia.

Sam exhibits internationally, and his work has been included in exhibitions and film festivals in America, Australia and Europe, such as, Deutsche Bank, London, Experiments in Cinema, New Mexico; Freies Museum Berlin; Australian International Experimental Film Festival, Melbourne and Ambika P3 Gallery, London.

Sam’s research and work investigating the history of cinema in rural Victoria provided much of the background research for The Cinemas Project. He has also designed The Cinemas Project website.


Therese Keogh is a Melbourne based artist, exhibiting her work locally, interstate, and throughout regional Victoria. Recent exhibitions include; Eclipse (return), Articulate Project Space, Sydney 2013, raft, Craft Victoria, Melbourne 2013, The Equatorial Arrangement (part one), Tarp Space, Ouyen 2013, The Sievers Project, Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne 2014, and, Obscured, Bus Projects, Melbourne 2014. She has worked as the project assistant on The Cinemas Project since 2011, contributing to the project’s early research phase, and development of a database of regional cinema sites. More recently, Therese has assisted artists on their individual projects, providing administrative and material support throughout the works’ evolution.
